After helping me create this year's Great Pumpkin Patch, my husband / apprentice created his own pumpkin pendant! And what a devious little pumpkin it is! 🎃
Etching the surface of the brass created a more organic texture and allowed me to add fine details like the ribs (segment lines) and the lines on the stem. The pumpkin is also adorned with a curly pumpkin vine, which creates the loop for the chain. The stone is carnelian, and was specifically chosen due to it's coloration and translucency. This allows the carved face to glow through the stone so well, revealing the red-orange gradient that cause the light to resemble a flickering candle. While laying flat it looks like a plain pumpkin, but with light behind it the carved face glows through the carnelian stone just like a jack-o-lantern. With its flat front and back combined with its rounded edges, the stone creates a cool shifting effect in the glowing face when it is moved from one light source to another!
All of the brass has been oxidized, a process which creates the blackened or antiqued appearance on the metal. The raised points have been polished to shine, while the low points retain the oxidized color to show off the depth and details. All metal used in each pendant is jeweler's brass.
This pendant measure 1.6" tall and 1.6" wide at it's widest point.Â

A few notes on caring for oxidized brass: oxidized patina on brass isn't particularly durable to long-term exposure to water (like bathing or swimming) or a lot of scrubbing, as friction is the way to polish brass to shine. Constant exposure to tasks such as hand washing, bathing, swimming, washing dishes, etc., will slowly wear away the oxidized patina leaving a shiny golden finish.
