For the first time, I have created some of my favorite designs in the warm-toned brass, adding a cozy autumnal feel. 💛
This beguiling little turnip has an atomic amethyst (also known as trapiche amethyst) set onto it's front side to mimic the coloration of the real root vegetable; when held to the light, it's carved face glows!
Etching the surface of the brass created a more organic texture and allowed me to add fine details like the striations and the veins and detailing in the leaves, The stone is an atomic amethyst, and was specifically chosen due to it's coloration and translucency. This allows the carved face to glow through the stone so well, revealing the pale lavender to vibrant violet coloration that causes the light to resemble a flickering candle. While laying flat it looks like a plain turnip, but with light behind it the carved face glows through the stone just like a jack-o-lantern.
This particular turnip features a carved fanged grin. All of the brass has been oxidized, a process which creates the blackened or antiqued appearance on the metal. The raised points have been polished to shine, while the low points retain the oxidized color to show off the depth and details. All metal used in this piece is brass.
This pendant measure 1.9" tall and 0.5" wide at it's widest point.Â

A few notes on caring for oxidized brass: oxidized patina on brass isn't particularly durable to long-term exposure to water (like bathing or swimming) or a lot of scrubbing, as friction is the way to polish brass to shine. Constant exposure to tasks such as hand washing, bathing, swimming, washing dishes, etc., will slowly wear away the oxidized patina leaving a shiny golden finish.
