With this specific fern compressions, my tentative identification after researching is a tree fern with Pecopteris genus leaves, with the most likely a Psaronius (a type of marattialean tree fern.) These existed from the Carboniferious through Permian periods; the earliest forms of herbivorous dinosaurs could have been feasting on these fronds!

A prehistoric fern compression in stabilized shale are the focal point in this paleobotany themed pendant. The backside is adorned with a small fern frond cast in sterling silver, preserving their organic textures in the metal. My maker's mark (BLJ) is also partially visible under the frond on the backside. The decorative bail for the chain features a design from an vintage wire die, featuring flourishes that echo the curvature of the fronds themselves.

The pendant measures approximately 1.6" tall and 1" wide at the widest point.
The raised points have been polished to shine, while the low points retain the oxidized color to show off the depth and details. All metal used in this piece is sterling silver.

This item is already made, and will be shipped 3-5 business days after the payment is processed. Shipping options will be available to choose upon check-out.

An important note: while the fern compression and shale itself are stabilized, this is still a fragile stone! Please take care to protect it from scratches, chemical exposure (like perfumes or chlorine), and water to best preserve this ancient fern.

A few notes on caring for oxidized sterling silver: oxidized patina on sterling silver isn't particularly durable to long-term exposure to water (like bathing or swimming) or a lot of scrubbing, as friction is the way to polish silver to shine. Constant exposure to tasks such as hand washing, bathing, swimming, washing dishes, etc., will slowly wear away the oxidized patina leaving a shiny silver finish.
