This medieval-inspired potions book is a fully opening locket, containing a variety of magical items inside.

Inside the locket:
- The crescent moon has been covered with layers of fused 24kt gold (keum boo), chosen to be the celestial element in this spell book.

- The stones are a faceted salt-and-pepper diamond, a faceted black spinel, and a Herkimer diamond (naturally faceted quartz). These were chosen to represent earth, with the salt-and-pepper diamond also selected to represent salt as a play on words.

- The plant is my interpretation of a fern leaf, chosen to represent living nature.

The title 'Potions' was added to the cover via etching. The cover is hinged in the front and opens to reveal the magical contents. The metal accents on the front and back covers all have a hammered texture. The inset border has been textured to mimic the pages of a tome. The locket latches on the side with a tiny clasp. The tome's spine has ridges, just like the binding of ancient tomes. The silver has been oxidized, a process which creates the blackened or antiqued appearance on silver. The raised points have been polished to shine, while the low points retain the oxidized color to show off the depth and details. This pendant measures 1.5" tall, 1.25" wide , and 0.3" deep. All metal used in this piece is sterling silver (with the exception of the gold accents).

* The only cosmetic flaw is that my maker's mark was applied upside-down on the inside of the front cover.

A few notes on caring for oxidized sterling silver: oxidized patina on sterling silver isn't particularly durable to long-term exposure to water (like bathing or swimming) or a lot of scrubbing, as friction is the way to polish silver to shine. Constant exposure to tasks such as hand washing, bathing, swimming, washing dishes, etc., will slowly wear away the oxidized patina leaving a shiny silver finish.
